Stationery and paper goods
Stationery is where most of my own trade is: I already sell Japanese stationery and paper wholesale to shops abroad. For a product under your brand, a planner is a good example of what has to be decided, because every part of it changes the maker, the setup cost and the minimum.
What can be made
- Planners and notebooks under your brand
- Name imprinting on existing stationery
- Washi tape, letter paper and paper goods in your packaging
How far it can be yours
Each step down adds setup work for the maker, and usually a larger minimum.
- Cover. Material (paper, cloth, synthetic leather) and colour.
- Logo. Foil stamping (箔押し) or printing. Foil usually needs a stamping die.
- Inside. Dated or undated, the calendar language, the page layout and the paper.
- Binding. Thread-sewn, glued or ring binding; each opens and wears differently.
Worth knowing first
Timing. A dated planner has to be produced months before its year starts, so the order date matters as much as the price.
Minimum lot, price and lead time
They are set by each maker and differ widely, so I do not publish typical figures. I bring back each maker's own minimum, unit price and lead time in writing, and tell you which change would bring the minimum down.
